How Do I Fix Indexing Problems?

26 September 2026 2 min read

Fix indexing problems by working down five causes in order: robots.txt blocking, noindex tags, wrong canonicals, thin or duplicate content, and wasted crawl budget. Search Console's Pages report tells you which category you are in, and each has a different fix.

The five fixes

  1. Robots block: check the file with the Sitemap and Robots Checker.
  2. Noindex tag: usually left over from staging. The On-Page SEO Checker reports it per page.
  3. Canonical pointing elsewhere: the page declares itself a duplicate of another URL. Fix the canonical.
  4. Thin or duplicate content: Google indexes one copy and drops the rest.
  5. Crawl budget: massive sites with low value URLs. Trim them.
