What Is the Difference Between Technical and On-Page SEO?

27 September 2026 2 min read

Technical SEO covers site-wide mechanics: crawlability, indexing, speed, HTTPS, sitemaps and redirects. On-page SEO covers what is on each page: titles, meta descriptions, headings, content, schema and internal links. The order matters: technical comes first, because a perfect page Google cannot crawl does not exist.

The split in practice

  • Technical: robots.txt, sitemap, canonicals sitewide, Core Web Vitals, redirect hygiene.
  • On-page: unique titles and metas, H1 and heading structure, depth, alt text, per-page schema, internal links.

Check both sides free

Technical side: the Sitemap and Robots Checker plus the Core Web Vitals Checker. On-page side: the On-Page SEO Checker grades 15 factors per page. Both together form a complete audit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which matters more?

Technical first as the foundation, then on-page per page. Neither works alone.

Is off-page SEO part of this?

Off-page means links and mentions, a third discipline that needs both of the others in place first.
