How Do I Fix Thin Content on My Website?
You fix thin content in one of three ways: expand the page if it deserves traffic, merge it into a stronger page if it overlaps, or redirect it away if nothing deserves to live there. Choose per page, never in bulk, because deleting useful URLs is as damaging as keeping useless ones.
The decision tree
- Does the page answer a real search? Expand it: add sections, data, an FAQ, examples. Depth beats padding.
- Does another page on your site already cover it? Merge, and 301 the old URL to the survivor.
- Is it an empty archive or placeholder? Redirect it to the nearest relevant page.
Before and after checks
Before touching anything, run the Content Quality Review to score what you have. After merging or expanding, verify the surviving page with the On-Page SEO Checker, and log every redirect in the Redirect Map Generator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I just delete thin pages?
Never without a 301. Deleted URLs with no redirect become 404s that waste link equity.
How long should an expanded page be?
Long enough to fully answer the query. Usually 800 to 1500 words for guides.
