How Long Should a Title Tag Be?

25 August 2026 2 min read

Title tags should be 50 to 60 characters, with your primary keyword near the front and your brand at the end. Google cuts titles at about 600 pixels wide, which lands around 60 characters on desktop and slightly fewer on mobile.

The three rules

  1. Front load the keyword: the first 30 characters carry the most weight for both ranking and scanning.
  2. Make it a promise, not a label. "How to Fix Broken Links (Free Tool)" beats "Broken Links Page".
  3. Stay unique. Two pages with the same title compete with each other and confuse searchers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does title length affect ranking?

Only indirectly. What matters is that the full title displays and matches intent.

Will Google rewrite my title?

Sometimes, if it is too long, stuffed with keywords or duplicated across pages.
